Reasons you should NOT join teacher corp
You know I don’t think there is any one reason that a person should not join teacher corp. I have heard people say that you shouldn’t join just because you don’t know what else to do, or because you need a job. As I think about all the people in our program we all came with different motives and goals. But one thing that we all have the ability to do is roll with the punches and an ability to learn on our feet and keep on moving forward. If you are so set on your ways being the right ways you are in for a world of hurt.
I wrote a blog last year about brushing your shoulders off (The Jay-z song) and I can’t stress how important this is as a teacher in the corp. If you find that things bother you and just wont go away the teacher corp is not for you. I can’t count the number of times that I could have thrown a tantrum about things not working like they should. But instead you brush your shoulders off and move to plan B (My students have started teasing me about plan B)
Here is a list of things that if you can’t brush it off don’t bother
The copier is constantly out of paper (and you needed tests for today)
Mice got into your cupboard and ate your play-dough
Not enough desks
Too many desks
Random drop in observations by consulting groups on last day of semester
Not enough textbooks
The wrong textbooks
Overhead projector bulb goes out mid lecture
Fat girl fight
Whole cafeteria fight
Being called upon for duty every waking minute
Being penalized for not showing up to a voluntary duty
This list is just a start. But remember if you can’t handle the Wild West don’t come. This is not a perfect teaching situation. It is a challenge that will rock you to the core. You can’t sleep without dreaming of kids, and sometimes just can’t sleep at all. You are forced to grow up sooner than you wish and you are thrown into an isolated world that few can relate to.
But if you have big cajones then get down here! Mississippi needs you!
